Monday, 11.03.2002: Camarones - overnight drive

We left at 7-30am and went straight to the penguin colony. There are 30.000 of them there but 95% were out at sea so we only saw a few hundred.

At the penguin colony

We stopped at 2pm in a large town near a petrol station in a dusty back street to set up for lunch whilst Prue and Darrell fixed a tyre. In the afternoon Myles did a movie quiz and later on there was an English slang quiz.

As our visas for Argentina expired that day we decided to drive through the night to get through the two border crossings (Arg-Chile and back to Arg).

We stopped at the side of the road at 10-30pm and did a quick dinner while Prue went for a snooze on Darrell´s bad. She will be taking over during the night. It´s a big advantage to have two drivers on the truck!

Tuesday, 12.03.2002: Magellan Straits - Ushuaia

At 4-50am we filled out the forms for the Argentine border where we arrived at 5-20am. Then over to the Chilien side. It was freezing!

We got to the ferry an 7am but had to wait an hour to cross the Magellan Straight to Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire). Then we found out that because we´re in Chile we´re gone an hour back so we actually had a 2 hour wait for the ferry. It was sunny but soooo cold! We got all our thermals and fleeces out and had a hot chocolate on the ferry.

Crossing Magellan Straight

At 12-30pm we had to cross the two borders again. We stopped at a little town and picked up some pastries for lunch. In the late afternoon we finally saw the mountains of Fireland. Beautiful!

We went through Ushuaia, the most southerly town in the world, and got to the campsite at 7pm. The campsite had a big common room with a nice hot oven and Prue organised a BBQ from the hosts for dinner. It was an early night for most of us.
